As research into CBD as an alternative or complement to traditional medicine advances, more and more myths and doubts arise about this hemp compound.

Cannabidol, or CBD, is a non-toxic compound with important therapeutic properties from the marijuana plant. Despite its growing popularity and the fact that there are many products on the market that contain CBD (from cosmetic products such as body creams to pet foods), most people still have doubts about the effects of CBD, its advantages and how it works.

CBD drugs you because it comes from the marijuana plant.

Contrary to what many people believe, not all compounds that come from hemp will get you high, nor will all cannabinoids make you feel the effect of "high". In fact, the cannabis plant contains over 400 active compounds, including over 100 cannabinoids and other components.

Unlike THC, CBD does not produce any kind of high or euphoria, even at high doses.

CBD is good for health and THC is bad.

Another interesting myth that is very much linked to the moral values of our society is that CBD is good for our health but THC is not. Why does this happen? Because THC drugs you or gets you high and this is the biggest stigma attached to marijuana use.

Today, scientific studies have shown that the physiological and clinical benefits arising from the combination of THC and CBD in different treatments justify their combination in pharmaceutical preparations. Studies from the California Pacific Medical Center (San Francisco) establish that the combination of CBD and THC has a more potent anti-tumour effect than the application of the compounds separately when tested on brain or breast cancer cells.

CBD is medicinal and THC is recreational.

Some people approach our experts saying that they want to benefit from "the medicinal part of the plant and not get high". Despite being the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, THC in low doses has medicinal properties, such as inhibiting an enzyme involved in the development of Alzheimer's-related dementia or being used as an anti-nausea and appetite stimulant.

As mentioned above, the combination of CBD and THC may be helpful for some treatments. For example, CBD has been shown to enhance the anti-inflammatory properties of THC. Some parents of epileptic children have found that adding a little THC or THCA (the unheated version of THC) helps control their child's seizures.

The CBD leaves you sedated.

There is a myth that CBD causes an elevated state of sedation.

A publication in the journal Current Pharmacology points out that low-dose CBD may work as a pharmacist to help you stay more awake.

On the other hand, when consumed in higher moderate doses, CBD helps reduce stress and anxiety by helping to restore sleep patterns.

CBD can cause overdose.

It is very unlikely that anyone will overdose on CBD, especially accidentally. Too high a dose of CBD can cause anxiety or confusion and, in some cases, drowsiness and even diarrhea, appetite disturbances and fatigue have been reported to be transient but always temporary.

High doses of CBD are more effective.

Isolated CBD products require higher doses to be as effective as CBD-rich cannabis plant oil extracts, as these CBD-rich oils have a much wider therapeutic window than products from isolated CBD.

This does not mean that all products containing CBD require high doses to be effective, the dosage depends on each type of product and what you want to treat, so it is always better to seek expert advice as an excessive amount of CBD may be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose.

CBD is illegal in many countries.

The issue of the legality of hemp products has always been controversial. As researchers discover new therapeutic properties and uses for this plant, more confusion and debate is generated about the legality of these products.

It should be noted that the legislation on these products varies from country to country. In many European countries, Uruguay or Canada, for example, CBD products are legal if they contain a minimum dose of THC.

In summary, although much remains to be discovered about cannabinoids, cannabis compounds like CBD have real medicinal benefits such as relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety, reducing pain and inflammation, improving sleep and decreasing seizures. As we learn more about the properties and benefits of the plant's compounds we will probably move forward, demystifying and normalizing the use of CBD and THC in different treatments.
